Riveting installation process of dome-head open type blind rivet
Feb 12, 2019

When both ends of the rivet are operable, there are many choices of fasteners. However, if only one end of the assembly can be operated, the choice of fasteners is greatly reduced; the open-end blind rivet is one of the choices. Metals, plastics, composites, wood and fiberboard can be fastened.

The dome-head open blind rivet consists of a smooth cylindrical body and a flared body. A mandrel with a spherical end extends from the bottom of the rivet through the rivet body and out of the center of the nail head.

When the blind rivet is installed, the fastener is inserted into the gripping mechanism of the rivet gun and then placed into the drilled or punched hole that has been prepared on the component.

When the tool is activated, the jaws of the gripping mechanism clamp the mandrel and pull it into the rivet body. The mandrel ends radially extend the rivet wall and fill it with holes. At the same time, the mandrel forms a load-bearing head or sphere at the end of the rivet to secure the panels together.

When the tensile load acting on the mandrel exceeds the load required for the deformation of the rivet body, the mandrel is broken at a predetermined location; the open-ended blind rivet of the dome head is made of carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, etc. .

The rivet joint of the dome-head open blind rivet has a tensile strength of 8000 N and a shear strength of about 12,000 N. In addition to the computer case, the rivet is also used to assemble heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment, electrical cabinets, automobiles, ships, containers, aircraft, elevators and other products.
