How to properly apply rivet nuts

Proper application of riveting nuts will increase the service life. Today I’ll take you to see how proper application can not easily reduce the service life of riveting standard parts?

1.Necessary Tools to Apply Rivet Nuts

  • Manual rivet nut tool selection

  • Hand rivnut tools come in light and heavy-duty types for different sheet thicknesses and rivet nut sizes. Lightweight hand tools work fine for small nuts and thin panels.
  • Matching mandrels for different rivnut sizes

  • Use the exact mandrel matched to each rivnut thread size. Mismatched mandrels strip threads or damage the nut body. Check sizes before installation.

2.Step-by-Step Process to Properly Apply Rivet Nuts

  • Pre-drilling panel holes

  • Drill holes strictly following the outer diameter of rivet nuts. Oversized holes cause loose mounting, undersized holes block insertion. Deburr hole edges after drilling.
  • Tightening rivet nuts to standard torque

  • Pull in several slow stages instead of one hard pull. Excessive pull force cracks panels, while insufficient pull leads to loose nut

3.Common Mistakes When Applying Rivet Nuts

  • Loose rivet nut after installation

  • This usually comes from oversize holes, insufficient pulling force or soft thin sheets. Switch to wide-flange rivnuts and redo installation.
  • Rivet nut deformation during pulling

  • Wrong mandrels or sudden strong pulls bend the rivnut shell. Fit correct mandrels and pull evenly and slowly.

4.Practical Tips for Proper Rivet Nut Installation

  • Install aluminum rivet nuts on thin sheets

  • Aluminum rivnuts are lightweight for thin aluminum and decorative panels. Use low pulling power to avoid denting thin metal.
  • Steel rivet nut assembly standards

  • Steel rivnuts offer high load capacity for machinery and cabinet frames. Shake the nut lightly after installation to test firmness.
