What are the advantages and disadvantages of riveting compared to welding?

1. Introduction to Riveting and Welding

Riveting and welding are the two most widely used metal joining methods.
Riveting is a mechanical fastening process. It uses metal rivets to penetrate pre-drilled holes on workpieces, then deforms the rivet ends through pressure to lock the parts tightly together. 
Welding is a thermal fusion process. It applies high temperature to melt the base metal and filler material, fusing separate metal parts into an integrated whole after cooling and solidification.

2. Main Advantages of Riveting

Riveting remains a metal joining method in many industries, even with widespread welding adoption. 
First, riveted joints deliver excellent vibration resistance and structural stability.  This is why riveting is widely used in bridge structures, railway vehicles and aerospace equipment that bear frequent vibration and impact loads. The connection tightness remains stable for a long time without easy loosening or failure.Riveted joints hold up far better under continuous vibration and repeated impact. 
Second, riveting work features simple quality inspection and convenient later maintenance. The quality of riveted joints can be judged directly by visual observation and simple manual detection.
 

3. Key Disadvantages of Rivets and Riveting

Riveted joints cannot achieve full tightness. Tiny gaps always exist between rivets and pre-drilled holes, as well as between stacked metal plates. No matter how precise the construction is, these gaps cannot be eliminated completely. As a result, riveting is not suitable for sealed equipment like gas pipelines, liquid storage tanks and pressure vessels, as it easily causes air and liquid leakage.
 

4. Advantages and Disadvantages of Welding

Welding’s core advantage is its integrated fusion effect. It melts base and filler metal to form a one-piece joint with the workpiece, delivering high overall strength and perfect airtight & watertight performance. It works well for all sealed pressure equipment. In addition, welding requires no extra fasteners, so it does not add structural weight, suiting modern lightweight product design. Automatic welding also supports high-efficiency construction, ideal for mass production and large-scale projects.
